The image above is a view of the Boulevard du Temple, Paris, France, 'exposed' by Louis Daguerre in 1838, and is the earliest known verified photograph of a person. The image shows a busy street, but because the exposure was four to five minutes long the moving 'traffic' is not visible. At the lower right, however, a man is apparently having his boots polished, so he and the bootblack polishing them were motionless enough for their images to be captured almost naturally in the image. Below is the same image I have restored to today's sharp and colorful standards. The 'realism' of the 1800's is historic and fascinating in my view, and my modern interpretation of the exact same scene is not intended to distract from Louis Daguerre's classic Boulevard du Temple scene. |
